The "CSI" Effect
A DNA expert is warning the public about what she calls the "CSI Effect."
TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation are giving juries unrealistic expectations about DNA evidence, Janne Holmgren told a justice conference in Calgary.
Holmgren, a consultant who specializes in DNA, cited a case in the United States of a man who shot his wife in front of witnesses at a fast food restaurant.
Police took his fingerprints off the gun and tested the bullet to confirm it came from the same gun. She says jurors still didn't convict the man because they wanted DNA evidence linking him to the scene.
