The Washington Post reported recently that:
in the United States, approximately three out of every 1,000 people are HIV-positive (less than ½ of 1 percent). In the nation's capital. however, the rate of infection is closer to 50 out of 1,000. That means 5% of the population of Washington, D.C. has AIDS. Or to put it another way, on average, in any group of 20 people, whether it be at school, church, restaurant or university, 1 person in each of these groups has AIDS.
Based on CIA statistics, if the District of Columbia were a country, it would rank 11th in the world in HIV prevalence, between Mozambique (1 in 14) and Tanzania (1 in 23).
